Dual Monitors are the bomb!
By | May 1, 2009
And I mean that in a good way. My friend Wayne Miller has had dual monitors for over a year now. The first time I walked into his office and saw it I was amazed, perplexed and downright befuddled. I thought he had too much time on his hands or just too much money to spend on cool gadgets. Boy was I wrong. I have had dual monitors since getting back from the Chicago Techshow and it has changed the way I work, for the better.
I manage a law firm with 35 employees. I handle files. I review the books. I search the web. I write books, articles, blogs and more. I review spreadsheets. I spent a lot of time clicking on the bottom tabs to keep opening and closing multiple pages. This is a major waste of time. When I got my first 22 inch screen things were a little better. I could have 2 pages side by side on my screen. This was a big improvement. However, now I can have 4 pages simultaneously open, 2 on each 22 inch screen. No more wasting time opening and closing. My efficiency has gone up. I now have Outlook open on one side, Time Matters on the other, Word on one half and my web browser open on the other. I see 4 screens all at once. If I open an attachment it opens on the opposite screen for better viewing. I am reviewing an article now while writing this blog without opening or closing anything. When an email comes in, I see it without doing anything. Same for an instant message for Time Matters. It is truly amazing.
I have read articles that say that your paralegals and secretaries should have dual monitors too. Here is a good article from PC World that lays out all the benefits and options you have when going to a dual monitor platform. One tech person I met in Chicago says the first thing he does when a new lawyer hires him is to bring in an extra monitor. The lawyers usually balk and the consultant offers to take it back for free in one week if the lawyer did not want it. He says he has never taken one back yet. I promise you, you will love this extra real estate on your desk.
